There have passed by a lot of “things” in my life since a year. Everything began with the composition of my new CD, “Things”, and with the meeting with an extraordinary artist from Romania.

Let’s get back in time a bit. There are several years since I was teenager and i was a music addict in all ways. I was absorbed by everything concerning the alternative genres: Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Steve Reich, Pink Floyd. I have to say that, during the period when I was playing drums i made part of a band that interpreted the pieces of Genesis, King Crimson and Yes. But I had a strong interest also in roots music by then. It’s the same moment when I exchanged my drums for a minimoog… well… for a small mixer and multi-track recorder, so that to be able to compose. Under the title of Janitor’s Animated i conceived ballet and theatre music and afterwards some film sound-tracks. This happened at the beginning of 90’s, while i was listening to a rummaging music: Bulgarian folk songs. This discovery opened up my eyes and ears towards all traditional music belonging to the Eastern European folks, popular vocal pieces but also touching instrumental sonorities like those ones of the Pan-flute, zither or cymbalom.

Back to the last year: i made several trips in Romania, a country where i felt like home from the first moment. Well… eventually i moved in Bucharest and I will start working on theatre projects soon and preparing my next album. Hope you will appreciate my new album titled : "things".

Que de « choses » se sont passé dans la vie d’apjiw depuis une année…

Tout a commencé avec la composition du nouveau cd ‘things’,et la rencontre d’une extraordinaire artiste Roumaine.

Mais remontons un peu dans le temps... il y plusieurs années lorsque j’étais adolescent, ma période mélomane si l'on peu dire. J’étais magnétisé par toute les musiques alternative…Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Steve Reich, Pink Floyd et j'en passe… faut dire qu’a l’époque je pratiquais la batterie et j’oeuvrais au sein d’un band qui interprétaient les musiques de Génésis, King Crimson et Yes.
Mais j’avais déjà a ce moment un fort penchant pour les musiques traditionnelles ethniques. C’est a ce même moment que j’ai échangé ma batterie contre un minimoog… he he… enfin avec un petit mixer et un enregistreur multipiste je me suis mis a la composition. Sous le nom de Janitor’s Animated j’ai composé pour du ballet et du théâtre et par la suite des trames sonores pour le cinéma. Cela se passe au début des années 90 et la j’entend une musique qui me bouleversa…c’étais le Mystère des voix Bulgares…oh qu’ils ont touché mon cœur et du même coup je me suis passionné pour toute les musiques originaires de l’est de l’europe… surtout les chants, mais aussi les instrument étranges aux sonorité envoûtante comme le ney , le zither et le cymbalom pour ne nommé que ceux la.

Donc revenons a l’année dernière… car il n’y pas de hasard.
J’ai effectué mon premier de 4 voyages en Roumanie au mois de Décembre 2007 et je m’y suis senti chez moi… un coup de foudre.
J’habite actuellement à Bucharest et je vais bientôt travailler sur des projets théâtrales. Du même coup je vais entamer la composition de mon prochain album. En espérant que vous apprécierez mon nouvel album "things".

Samedi dernier au Téléphone Rouge!

C'est au Téléphone Rouge que se déroulait samedi dernier le tout nouveau spectacle d'une série de 3, réunissant Apjiw et le groupe Sherbrookois The Banjo Consorsium. Le spectacle à été une réussite en plus de faire salle comble! En première partie, Apjiw était accompagné de l'excellent guitariste Éric Lamothe pour une prestation très riche en émotion qui a durée près de 45 minutes. J'ai été surpris par l'originalité artistique de la vidéo et la puissance instropective de sa musique. J'ai aussi reçu de très bon commentaires sur la première prestation de ce tout nouveau duo Montréalais. Au programme principal on retrouvait le groupe Sherbrookois de l'heure, le Banjo Consorsium, qui a fait complètement sauter la baraque! Et cela semble n'être que le début. L'expression utiliser par le rédacteur en chef "Matthieu Petit" du journal VOIR en dit long "Le folktronique du Banjo Consorsium est non seulement rassembleur; il kick sérieusement des culs"! Des performances époustouflantes plus qu'apprécié par un fan club de plus en plus inquiétant. Le groupe s'est vue ovationné en finale par une foule affamée qui en voulait encore. La dernière chanson présentée était "Until Morning" qui se retrouve sur la compilation "If we believe Vol.1" et a été interprétée par la propriétaire du bar (Geneviève), une très jolie voix qui en aura surprit plusieurs.

Félicitation au FAN, à Apjiw et au groupe The Banjo Consorsium pour nous avoir offert une soirée chaude en émotion, un spectacle qui restera gravé dans nos mémoires. Jean-François Mercier
